Hornet Hoverfly by GrahamSym Hornet Hoverfly by GrahamSym
Photograph taken in my back garden, this summer.
At almost 2cm long the Hornet Mimic Hoverfly (also known as the 'Belted Hoverfly') is the largest in Britain. As its name suggests, this fly is an excellent mimic of the Hornet but is harmless. Only a very rare visitor to the country up to the 1940s, in recent years it has become more common in southern England and is still spreading northwards, perhaps as a result of the warmer climate. The adults are migratory and the larvae live inside wasp's nests.

If you ever saw a Japanese hornet you would be frightened by the sight of this.  Even though this is only two CC long, a Japanese hornet is min three times as long, looks identical, it sting feels like sticking finger in electrical socket and its bit will take a big chunk out of you.  And it is the only hornet that see on my window all night, doing it's best to get in house.  During day they hang around the sap of a maple out in front yard.  You not want to even get close to that tree.  Oh and spray them with a can of hornet spray, you only make them mad.  Eventually enough will kill them, but you better be behind cover, cause they coming straight for that stream.   Never saw one until lived in the United states.   There was unfortunate to encounter them.  Now have great respect.   By the way, excellent picture.   Really detailed.  Not afraid of much, but these have earned my respect.

I would not like to meet one of those, sounds frightening and dangerous!
Luckily this was a hoverfly, they look scary but they are not dangerous.
I am scared of wasps and hornets :(

not scared of bumble bees or honey bees, but wasp, yes.  Neighbor hood boy was spraying wasp spray on a nest and guess who get stung, him, no me.  Guess who had to have a reaction, me and spend a week in Isolation because they didn't understand sign language when try to tell them it was a wasp that had been sprayed.  After a week they came to conclusion that was not contagious, oh did they figure out why suddenly was having fevers and hives, no.    anyways thanks for chatting.
